While I was trimming pumpkin vines over the weekend I noticed a rotten pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, so yesterday after work I decided to wade into the pumpkin vines and check on all the pumpkins.
There are no paths left, or even beds really. The pumpkins have swamped almost everything but the trees, and even those have to be rescued every few weeks. Going into the pumpkin patch means holding the leaves aside and stepping (or jumping) from one foot-sized open patch to the next. I also made the mistake of wearing a skirt. Pumpkin leaves has jagged sharp edges and cause an itchy rash on my skin. Even with the scratching, I’m so glad I waded into the pumpkin patch when I did.
That’s 46+ pounds of pumpkins right there. The largest one is a little over 10 pounds. Two of them have green stems so I’ll have to cook them tonight. I gave two away to neighbors as soon as I harvested them as a thank you for putting up with my crazy gardening practices.
I am so excited about these pumpkins. We’re having house guests this weekend and they’re getting a pumpkin bonanza. I’m already thinking about all the recipes I want to make! Pumpkin gnocchi. Pumpkin bundt cake with pecans. Pumpkin curry soup. Pumpkin with pipian sauce. Pumpkin muffins.
