Obligatory Spring Garden Porn

Look. I have peas.

I am so excited. This is the third time trying to grow sweet peas and the first time the plants have survived long enough to actually produce. There are 10 whole peas on here, after taking the first one back for the soil and eating a couple straight off the vine.

This is the other kind of pea I planted, the plants are much larger and stout-looking, with these gorgeous purple flowers. It hasn’t fruited yet.

I will say, these recycled bamboo trellises did not work. There wasn’t enough horizontal support for the vines to attach to, which I know will hurt the yield. The strong rain and wind last weekend broke many of the pea plants that weren’t attached to anything, and they all died.

These are the Seminole pumpkins that started their lives in recycled bottle cloches. They look really good! These aren’t going to produce until after we move to the new house. I am hoping that someone in the neighborhood will volunteer to take over the gardening beds after I move, or the neighborhood association will leave the beds in place long enough that I can harvest a few pumpkins after I move.

And last but not least, the first Giant Swallowtail caterpillar has appeared. We have decided this poor grafted citrus tree is not worth moving to the new house, so we’ll be planting it in a sunny corner of the yard, caterpillars and all. I don’t expect it to survive this year but hopefully it will go to feed some gorgeous butterflies.
