After several days of soaking rain and the weather finally cooling in some autumn-like way, the seeds I planted three weeks ago have finally started coming up in earnest. I have 2 different types of carrots, sugar snap peas, parsley, cilantro, and some mesclun mix. Having never grown carrots or snap peas, it’s all a wild experiment. I’m building a different sort of trellis for the snap peas, which I’m kind of excited about, actually. Who knew trellis-building would be so rewarding?
I have a barrel full of 1/4 to 1/2″ wide, 3- 6′ long bamboo canes and as much vine as I could ever need. Wonder what I’ll come up with?
I am sad to say that this cow pool is not going smoothly. Greenway Farms does not want to deal with my regular butcher. My regular butcher isn’t returning my calls. The butcher that Greenway Farms will deal with is more expensive, and I probably won’t be able to keep the meat under $5 per pound. If I don’t keep the meat price per pound low enough I won’t be able to sell enough shares to make up an entire cow. $5 per pound is $125 per share- 25 lb of cut and wrapped meat. $125 is a lot of money, you know? We have always fronted the money for cow pools. We have to write two separate checks to make everything legal and my husband is balking at fronting this much money to two separate businesses. I think I’m going to just drive out to the new butchers’ tomorrow and talk to them in person. That *always* helps.
